Ulysses S. Grant

1869 to 1877

This president was born Hiram Ulysses Grant, but a West Point clerk enrolled him as Ulysses Simpson Grant by mistake. Grant kept that new name. He was embarrassed to be a soldier with initials that spelled "HUG."
