Hands-on Science

We talked about volcanoes last week because we were studying Venus, and of course, there are many volcanoes on Venus. This was a quick demonstration on volcanic matter.

We started with flour mounded on top of an overturned glass bowl. Then we melted butter. This symbolizes molten rock, or magma. The rock changes its state of matter by being heated until it is a liquid. The girls suggested we color the butter for a more realistic effect.

After a volcano erupts, the molten rock is referred to as lava. We poured our "lava" over the top of the bowl.

After time, the "lava" cooled into what we call basalt.
